The Space Between Sessions

A self-care space for therapists. Through expressive art. No talent required.

You hold space for everyone. Your clients. Your family.

Who holds space for you?

The Space Between Sessions  is a monthly self-care group for therapists, counselors, and clinicians. For 90 minutes, you take off the clinical hat and take care of yourself, through intuitive drawing, movement, writing, sound, collage, and play.

No case talk. No supervision. No one analyzing your drawing. (We know you want to. Please don’t.)

You don’t need to be “creative”. In expressive arts, the process matters more than the product.

This is not another training

There are no CE credits and no certificates here. That’s on purpose.

This is a space for being, not for doing. A space to meet the parts of yourself that need care and attention.

Your participation is always voluntary. You never have to share. You can simply be present, create, and listen. That is enough.

How it works

Each session begins with a simple invitation. Then you get time for your own creative practice, a moment to reflect, and a closing together as a group.

That’s it. You show up. You make something. You may leave a little lighter.

Come to one, or come to all!

Each group stands on its own, so pick the themes that call to you. Or come to all 12 and build a full self-care practice over time. Either way, you’re welcome.

The themes:

  • Arriving. Making space for yourself.
  • The Body Knows. Listening before the mind catches up.
  • Breath, Rhythm & Sound. Regulation you can carry anywhere.
  • Permission to Rest. Because the caseload never finishes.
  • Boundaries. What stays at the office.
  • Inner Critic, Inner Ally. Meet the good-enough therapist.
  • Emotions as Weather. What’s yours, what’s theirs.
  • Play & Laughter. You invite clients to play. Your turn.
  • Senses & Nature. Coming back to the present.
  • Self-Compassion. Speaking to yourself like someone you love.
  • My Circle of Care. Because this work can be lonely.
  • Integration. Your personal self-care compass.

Instructor(s)

Irene Rodriguez, LMHC, REAT

EMDRIA-Approved Trainer

Irene M. Rodriguez, LMHC, REAT, is a Boricua Caribeña, born and raised in Puerto Rico. She is a cisgender woman who moves through the world with the privileges of being able-bodied and middle class. She brings humor, heart, and a spiritual lens to everything she does. Irene is a bilingual EMDRIA-Approved EMDR Trainer and Consultant, a Registered Expressive Arts Therapist, and a trauma specialist. She has over twenty years of clinical experience. She teaches EMDR through attachment and dissociation, and she makes big concepts easy to understand. No intimidation. She founded Mindful Journey Center, where she offers therapy, retreats, consultations, and EMDRIA-approved EMDR trainings in English, Spanish, and bilingual formats. Her work blends expressive arts, mindfulness, and parts work. She also directs the Certificate of Expressive Arts Therapy Program. Irene supports clinicians who work with complex trauma, dissociation, and attachment wounds. Her trainings are trauma-informed, culturally responsive, creative, and body-based. They take care of the therapist, not just the client. She is also a certified Laughter Yoga and Meditation Facilitator and a Sound Healing Practitioner. She has presented at EMDRIA Summits and Conferences and has been a member of the EMDRIA Upside review team since 2024. She is a contributing author, with Dr. Jamie Marich, in EMDR Therapy and Creative Arts Therapy. In 2026, she received the EMDRIA Outstanding Contribution & Service Award. Irene is also a mixed-media artist. She tells stories the way she feels them, mixing intuition, creativity, and clinical knowledge. Her learning spaces are grounded and playful, welcoming and inclusive. For her, art is a path to healing, connection, and getting joy back. Irene lives in Puerto Rico with her rescued dog, Lucky Bones, and twelve very expressive lovebirds.
